2006 Lone Star Grand Prix

The American Le Mans Series Lone Star Grand Prix was held May 11-12 in conjunction with the Champ Car Grand Prix of Houston. The venue was the parking lots and access roads around Reliant Park, which is where Reliant Stadium (home of the NFL Houston Texans) and the old Astrodome are located. These photos were originally taken for the now defunct RacingPress.com.

ALMS paddock on Wednesday and Thursday, May 10 & 11. Wednesday was not an official event day, but anyone could wonder in as the teams were setting up.

2006 Lone Star GP ALMS Race

The 2 hour & 45 minute race was run Friday evening, starting in light and ending in darkness. Overall & P1 Winners was the Audi Sport North America R8 of Allan McNish & Renaldo Capello. P2 winner was the Intersport Racing Lola-AER of Clint Field & Liz Halliday. The GT1 winner was the Corvette Racing C6-R of Oliver Gavin & Olivier Beretta. The GT2 winner was the Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 of Mike Rockenfeller & Klaus Graf

A short gallery of the Howmet TX turbine-powered sports car that raced in the late ’60s. These photos were taken during the historic racing weekend at Road America in Wisconsin in 1996. At the time, restoration of the car was nearly completed.

Can-Am 30th

The Canadian-American Challenge Cup racing series for FIA Group 7 sportscars began in 1966. In 1974 it ended. In between, some of the greatest drivers and racing cars in the sport’s history participated in the series. In July, 1996, to celebrate the Can-Am’s 30th anniversary, many of those cars and drivers gathered together during the Merrill Lynch/Brian Redman International Challenge at the Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. This section contains photos of some of the cars that took part in the 30th Anniversary Can-Am Reunion.

Unfortunately, two of the most famous makes to race in the Can-Am were not properly represented. One was Chaparral. None of Jim Hall’s Chaparral chassis appeared, although the Mclaren M12 he fielded for part of the 1969 season did. The other was Porsche. There were several Porsches present for the International Challenge but no Can-Am cars. The closest was a 917 spyder (a coupe with the roof removed) that raced in the Interseries, a German version of the Can-Am.

Chaparral McLaren M12

1969 customer McLaren sold to Jim Hall. He entered it in several Can-Am races for John Surtees to race while the Chaparral 2H was being developed. Later driven by Jerry Titus, Peter Revson, and David Hobbs. All photos taken at the Can-Am 30th Reunion at Road America in 1996.

Ferrari 430GT

Three Ferrari F430GTs were present for the 2007 ALMS Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston, Texas, on April 21. Dirk Muller and Jaroslav Janis finished 16th overall and 4th in class in the #32 Peterson White Lightning Ferrari. Mika Salo and Jaime Melo were the GT2 class winners and 13th overall in the #62 Risi Competizione car. Niclas Jonsson and Tracy Krohn suffered mechanical problems in the #61 Risi/Krohn Ferrari and were not classified at the end of the race.

Aston Martin DBR9

Two Aston Martin DBR9s participated in the American Le Mans Series inaugural Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston, Texas, on May 12, 2006. The 007 of Darren Turner and Tomas Enge finished 4th overall and 3rd in GT1 while the 009 of Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin was 5th overall and 4th in class.

The Houston Trans-Am race was part of the CART Texaco GP of Houston. It was run late Saturday afternoon. Paul Gentilozzi started on pole in his AutoLink Corvette but was beaten to the checkered flag by teammate Bill Saunders and the winning Valvoline Mustang of Brian Simo.

The Corinthian Vintage Auto Racers hold vintage racing events in Texas and Oklahoma. One of their big events each year are the Marvelous May Races held at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. I attended the May Races in 2000 and these are some of the open-wheeled racers that were there.
